John Brown was a Villain. “John Brown was not only a murderer of innocent persons, but he attempted one of the greatest crimes against society -- the stirring of a servile and civil war” (Document H). John Brown’s actions have caused many people to suffer injuries or even death. He’s caused many problems and committed crimes including treason, murder, and destruction of property. This is important because he was the spark that started the first modern war, the Civil War. Many people believed he was a hero, but many others believed he was a villain. Generally, people would tell the truth in court so they do not face punishment if they lied. “I certainly intended to have made a clean thing of that matter, as I did last winter when I went to Missouri, and there took slaves without the snapping of a gun on either side, moving them through the country, and finally leaving them in Canada. I designed to do the same thing again on a larger scale. That was all I intended to do. I never intended murder or treason, or the destruction of property, or to excite or incite the slaves to rebellion, or to make insurrection.” (Brown Doc F). If you look at what he did before the speech he had made, you could tell he was lying. Many people argue that John Brown was a hero who saved the slaves. However, what this argument fails to consider is that John Brown had murdered many innocent people during his missions, committed treason, stole weapons, and damaged property that was not his. John Brown even admitted his actions, meaning it is true he lied by saying he did not mean to commit murder and treason. According to document H, many people were happy he got hanged and many people were questioning his actions and saying they were wrong. This clearly shows that John Brown’s actions were not
