He kills many people who just are in his way. On the night of May 24, 1856, the radical abolitionist John Brown, five of his sons, and three other associates murders five proslavery men brutally with knives and swords. Just four years later, he seizes the arsenal at the Harpers Ferry, take weapons from there, and destruct many properties of the town. By destructing properties and murdering many innocent people, he starts a guerrilla war. He kills many people and scares many others.
“Fight with fire and strike terror in the heart of the proslavery people” (“UShistory” 1). This inspired John Brown and his followers. John Brown grew up with a father that passionately disagreed with the idea of slavery. As Brown grew older he became a radical abolitionist. He lead the Pottawatomie Creek massacre and the raid at Harpers Ferry.
The persona of John Brown is a mystery. His biography reveals a man who wasdedicated throughout his life to the cause of equality for African Americans, and he wentto the extent of giving his life for it. He was marked as a singular example of a white manwho died for the cause of black freedom. His actions, however insecurely they may have been grounded in reason, undeniably made an impact. His consistency in perpetuating theabolition movement by any means was a major reason for pushing the nation into war.
John Brown was very important in some ways. He tried to free slaves from Southern states but, he did it wrongfully. John Brown was a very mean and violent man. Yes, he was trying to free slaves but he was doing it the wrong way.
The second reason, John Brown led a revolt. “These men are all talk, what we need is action, action!” John Brown said before He and his men (in October 16, 1859) raided the Federal Arsenal armory, and as a result, shook the south. Upon hearing he was going to be hung he stated: “…if it is deemed necessary that I should forfeit my life for the furtherance of the ends of justice, and mingle my blood further with the blood of my children and with the blood of millions in this slave country whose rights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and unjust enactments--I submit; so let it be done!”
Brown grew up in a house that didn’t like people having slaves and was very religious. So every decision’s he made he didn’t regret because he was doing it for god or for the slaves. Everything he did he believed it was a mission from god.
He was willing to die to make something happen, he went with a few men to conquer an armory, although he was not aware of the fact the probability of death was way higher than he thought because of his insanity, but he still knew that there was chance of death. The South thought John Brown was a terrorist. They state that he was evil for murdering a lot of citizens because some of them may have not treated their slaves that bad, and it is just plain evil to kill for no reason. This is not true.
George Fitzhugh claimed that "The Negro slaves of the South are the happiest the freest people in the world." (Document H). John Brown a major person in the fight to end slavery "led a band of 18 men into Virginia to seize the federal arsenal there, distribute the captured arms to slaves in the area, and create a general slave uprising." (Document I).John Brown was executed and the aftermath of his death made tensions rise betwwen the North and South. "
John Brown was an abolitionist from the North who was raised to think that slavery was a sin. He was so devoted to God, that he broke many laws and killed a lot of white slave owners in order to achieve a "moral end." So in reality, he thought he was doing good and serving God's will, but he was actually costing lives and doing more bad than good. Over the course of his life, he had over twenty children with two wives and John Brown and his sons fought against slavery, which resulted in some sons dying. Brown moved his family a lot over many different states, and his home in Pennsylvania was a stop on the Underground Railroad.
His family believed that there should be no slavery. When John Brown was older he took a vowel to be an abolitionist which means someone who is against slavery. John Brown thought that if he wasn't getting "lucky" pleasing God therefore he wasn't trying to be a perfect young adult. Brown thought if he pleased God he would live for eternity in heaven. He was an abolitionist who believed that slavery was wrong. The reason why he is guilty is because even though he was just trying to help, he hurt many people in the process. It is understandable that he was just trying to follow through with what he was thinking but he brought innocent people into it. John brown is guilty of three charges. One of three being treason.
In the painting of John Brown at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it illustrates how the slaves admired John Brown for fighting for the slaves rights. The photo shows John Brown leaving a building while slaves gather to see him. One slave is seen holding their baby up towards Brown, (Document D). This shows how John Brown wanted slavery to be abolished but other Southerners did not feel this way, which contributed to war. In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe provides evidence of how America should follow a different example.
Looking at what he has fought for, it’s no doubt that he fought for a noble cause which is the freedom of slavery. John Brown shouldn’t be known as hero or terrorists because of want he has done applies to both sides. John Brown shouldn’t be known as a terrorist or a national hero because of his violent attack and raids. After, September 11, 2001 John Brown has been called a terrorist which has caused controversy about Brown’s legacy and reputation. Furthermore, in the article, The 9/11 of 1859 says, “He led 21 men all but two in their 20s, and many of them radicalized by guerilla fighting in Bleeding Kansas, the abolitionists’ Afghanistan”(Horowitz).
Through his writings, Brown tells us he had no doubt in his intentions being for the better, choosing to ignore these lives lost as they didn’t serve to further his cause. Scott John Hammond tell us about John Brown’s calculated nature by comparing him to Machiavellian philosophies, a philosophy associated with the use of power in often ruthless means, “Given the fact that all founders and reformers will inevitably encounter resistance from those enemies … Machiavelli notes that a lawgiver … must go forth armed and prepared for struggle” and “A founder is consonant with the idea of virtue, or grandeur of soul - a character of extraordinary proportions, defined in terms of “ingenuity, skill, and excellence.”
