What drives us to undertake a mission?
Sal Hiddle wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps, while Tom Sawyer and John Hammond were determined to get rich; however, all three dealt with hardship on the way to accomplishing their goals. John Hammond, the owner of Jurassic Park, is determined to set up a park where people can come and see living dinosaurs. Hammond is driven to accomplish his mission, but has some difficulties on the way. One difficulty is that the dinosaurs he tried to create were less like zoo animals at a local attraction and far more terrifying. For example, Crichton describes the the following scene, “Then the huge head came down, entirely blocking the shattered windshield. The tyrannosaur banged again on the front hood of the Land Cruiser. Tim grabbed the seat as the car rocked on its wheels. The tyrannosaur banged down twice more, denting the metal” (Crichton). Also, the

Sal is a country girl, living in Kentucky when suddenly, her father “plucked her up like a weed and took all of their belongings to Euclid, Ohio” (Creech). Sal is very unwilling to move anywhere, as living somewhere else is too difficult for her. When she finally gets to Ohio she recalls “No swimming hole, no barn, no cows, no chickens, no pigs. Instead, a little white house with a miniature patch of green grass in front of it” (Creech). Sal is not used to any other ways of living besides her own, so moving has a negative impact on her goals. Also, family plays a big role in Sal’s life, as her mother dying played a huge part in her mission. “I wished that my father was not such a good man, so there would be someone to blame for my mother's leaving. I didn't want to blame her. She was my mother, and she was part of me” (Creech). Sal wishes many unrealistic things such as hoping that her father was not such a good man so her mother would not have left her in the first
