The dominant religion is Anabaptists, which is closely related to Protestant Christians. Close to 300,000 people are amish, and practice Anabaptism. There is no other religion practiced. If a new religion is used then the person who believes it, is kicked out of the amish culture, and shunned by others. Protestant Christians believe in adult baptism, pacifism, the separation of church and state and the importance of the community to faith. They base their daily life and religious practice on a biblical instruction, “Be not conformed to this world” (Romans 12:2). They do not use technology, however they do not fear it. They base their beliefs off the bible. They do not use much electricity, and do not use cars. Instead of cars, they use the horse and buggy. Since, they do not use cars, the environment is being more protected. The Amish use wood or oil stoves for cooking. Meaning, they use less gases than average person uses, and when doing so it helps reduce pollution. Amish church services are held every other Sunday. Their worship begins at 8:00am, and usually lasts over 3 hours. For a funeral, the church service is held in the home. For men, this usually means white pants, vest, and shirt; for women a white dress, cape, and apron. For a wedding, The church service itself is held in home of the bride’s parents, is similar to the regular Sunday service. During the wedding meal, the couple sits at the corner of two tables called the "eck," with their attendants on either side. The unmarried boys and girls sit opposite of each other. The meal itself is a feast, including "roast," a mixture of bread filling and chicken, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, applesauce, and creamed celery. Amish women and men dress very differently than most people. Amish clothing worn by both men and women are uniform and do not draw attention to a certain individual. Their clothing is made out of plain, strong fabric in solid colors with no prints or designs. Amish men and boys wear dark colored socks, shoes, and pants with suspenders not a belt. They use buttons on their pants, not zippers. They wear a solid color shirt with a vest and/or jacket. In the summer, they will wear straw hats to protect them from the sun,. In the winter, they will wear felt hats to protect the from the cold. Amish women and girls wear long dresses that are solid colors and they wear a black or white apron over it. Amish women and girls must cover their hair whenever they go in public. They do this by wearing white prayer caps, and when it is colder, they will sometimes wear bonnets over them. Also amish women and girls must never cut their hair, so they braid it or put it in a bun under the prayer caps. After an amish man is married he doesn’t cut or trim his beard.
