Throughout history, there have been many influential figures and people to look up to, but today it seems that some of the examples are more deficient than beneficial. In a world full of corrupt musicians and political leaders, it is great to see someone who has affected the world and society in a positive way. From his difficult past to his successful future, he is a great example of a strong, positive influence in society today. John Mayer should be Time Magazine's "Person of the Year," because of his determination, success, and public involvement. For most of Mayer's career, he has been involved with many charities. According to Look at the Stars, Mayer has been involved with over twenty-three organizations such as Food Bank for New York, National Wildlife Federation, and Grammy Foundation. Not only that, but he has also founded his own foundation called, Back to You Fund to raise money for healthcare, education, the arts, and talent development. Mayer included the public in his organization through auctions of exclusive John Mayer items, such as guitar picks, t-shirts, and signed CDs (John Mayer: Charity Work, Events, and Causes). This shows how Mayer made his connection with the public and began getting more and more involved with the problems of society. He even wrote songs specifically aimed toward society. He gave people a view of what was actually happening in the world, more specifically his song "Waiting on the World to Change" gave a broader perspective. The song describes how most people deal with problems in the world. According to Song Facts, When Mayer sings, "Me and all my friends, we are all misunderstood, say we stand for nothing but there's no way we ever could," he's talking about his generation and their lack of faith in the government all we can do is wait, and it seems like everyone is waiting for the world to become a better place. We sit on our hands and watch as the government takes control (Song Facts). It's easy to become blind by what's happening in the world. Many can't see past the faded lies, but Mayer makes sure to bring that out into public view through his songs. He has many other songs that can be interpreted in the same way and bring a clearer view of what is really going on and how he wants the world to perceive it.
