Not being able to understand Music Theory but you’re playing an instrument is a set up for failure. Teaching yourself how to play an instrument can be a strength. It’ll help you build confidence in yourself by knowing you have the capability to teach yourself how to do something new. Perhaps you started playing and it just “came naturally”. But are you really learning the correct technique for that instrument? No, you’re not; so now your strength has become your weakness because of the way you have taught yourself. The muscle memory and the way you have heard the music played is now incorrect and has no value or significance to the way you play the song because you haven’t learned the correct way to play or read music. By looking at the kind of music someone listens to, that often reflects what kind of person they are. For example if someone listens to jazzy music you may view them as an upbeat, optimistic person. If they listen to heavy metal one could view them as a crazy, “wild child”. It’s not just the way the music sounds though; Lyrics also contributes to how music affects a person’s life. “Hundreds of studies have shown that words powerfully influence thinking, behavior, and mood, and much of it occurs without conscious awareness.” (Dr. John Schinnerer). The music that surrounds an environment can affect all who hear it. The rhythm and mood of a song can influence the way they feel but the lyrics to a song can affect the way they think, behave, and how they feel. Lyrics are very important when it comes to music. When listening to a song you may go from having a terrible day but then a song comes on about being happy and you start to feel better and more joyful and without realizing it you have been affected by the lyrics of the song subconsciously. Knowing the vocabulary of music can help you as well. Music theory can influence your mind, body, and emotional state. It affects your mind because with every piece of knowledge you are gaining you are learning how to show it in your sheet music, performance, or some other way that will make you practice to make you better. PLaying music theory affects your physical body because the musician is able to feel the instument with their body and they know how the whole instrument works because they first learned the technique of the instument through music theory. Music Theory also affects your emotional state because you are able to feel the mood in a song and it will affect your thoughts and your thoughts and attitude often lead to your emotions and how you react to your surroundings. Music theory is important for all aspects of life!
