Unit 1 Essay “Every man has a treasure.” The Pearl was written by John Steinbeck, and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers. Kino is very happy at the beginning, and then starts to get bad, because of when he finds the pearl, and he starts out by being violent. Greg Ridley was so excited to play basketball, but then he realizes there are things more important. Both Greg in “The Treasure of Lemon Brown’” and Kino from The Pearl go through life experiences that change their ideas of what is important.
On February 27, 1902 in Salinas Valley, California John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. was born to John Ernst Steinbeck Sr. and Olive Hamilton Steinbeck. He lived a modest childhood, as his father held multiple jobs in order to support the family. For a short time Steinbeck attended Stanford University, but in 1925 he dropped out to pursue his career as a writer. Later that year he went to New York to find inspiration for his first book which he would later name Cup of Gold.
John Steinbeck’s Inspiration for Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck brings his books to life through his first hand experience in Salinas, California. Born in Salinas, he became very familiar with the people that live and work there (Of Mice and Men 241). During Steinbeck’s life, he gains first hand experience with migrant laborers and a number of different events that influence his writing (Steinbeck, John 230). John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men because he was inspired by the ranch he worked on, the events happening during his life, and the people in his everyday life.
There are many lessons learned in the stories, "The King and the Shirt" and "Stonecutter". The first story, The King and the Shirt", teaches us about happiness. This story taught us that lesson by having a ordinary man who was extremely happy with his life, even though he didn't own very much. The story also makes the reader think different about their life. The second story, "Stonecutter", teaches us that nobody is better than you, and that you don't need to be somebody else to be happy.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning The Grapes of Wrath, widely attributed to be part of the American literary canon, is considered Steinbeck's masterpiece. Steinbeck had a happy growing up with 3 sisters.

During the Depression Era, there were also many other American writers who were writing at the same time as Steinbeck.
Then he realizes that he was not going to stay with his money when he die. At the end, he helped his employee with a monetary situation. Further, he went to his nephew’s Christmas dinner. Significantly, this novel helps people retrain the meaning of being humble and kind with others. Something that is very important about this novel is that it teaches a lesson of helping others, because you are not going to stay with your money when you die.
In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck portrays that migrant workers in the Great Depression do not value life in all of its potential. George and Lennie’s friendship is different from what the expectation is, the two of them depend on each other. On the ranch friendship has no place. The workers on the ranch view life as expendable, George and Lennie’s friendship provides an alternative in that they offer companionship to one another and share a common dream. Despite the allure of their friendship and their dream, survival of the fittest overpowers the desire for community.

For example, his father owned a “feed-and-grain” store and managed a flour plant.
Kino should have listened to the better judgments of others before being consumed by greed. “The Pearl” taught me lots of motifs about good and bad aspects of life. I learned how people can easily experience greediness and how it affects their life. After I read this book, I realized that I should always give careful attention to other’s judgments even though I believe mine is right. This is because ignoring others’ decisions can lead us to bad situations like Kino went through.
In a world full of many authors, three have outlived most with their amazing style of writing. They are Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, and O. Henry. Although the world has changed greatly in the past 100 years, these authors are still considered excellent. Their unique writing styles have helped them withstand the test of time. Mark Twain used regional dialect, O. Henry used clever wordcraft, and John Steinbeck used social commentary.
In The Winter of our Discontent by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck discusses what the American dream meant for families in the 1960s. The American dream that most families strived for included a happy marriage, well behaved children, a stable job with a decent paycheck, and a nice house. Every character in the novel has a dream that they wanted to accomplish but could not. Ethan dreamed of wealth and power, but felt guilty in the end because he went too far in trying to reach his goals. Marullo already had his dream, but it was stripped away from him when Ethan reported him to immigration services.
John Steinbeck: A Literary Light in the Great Depression " The ancient commission of the writer has not changed. He is charged with exposing our many grievous faults and failures, with dredging up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams for the purpose of improvement"(“John Ernst Steinbeck”). Said by John Steinbeck as he accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature, this quote illustrates perfectly the goals and ideals Steinbeck held himself to in his writing. Steinbeck pursued above all to give the common folk of the Great Depression a voice; an endeavor that grants him a place with the great writers of America.
At the beginning of the story, Kino is a kind-hearted man who cares for his family. At the climax of the story, Kino is very greedy, selfish, violent, scared, and he doesn 't seem to care that much about his family. At the end of the story, he realizes his sins and wants to become a good man again. At first Kino hears “…a song now, clear and soft, and if he had been able to speak of it, he would have called it the Song of the Family.” (Steinbeck, 6).
John Steinbeck is widely known as one of the most memorable American writers and has greatly influenced realistic and regionalistic literature in the writing world. Steinbeck’s most well-known works that accomplished this are To a God Unknown and East of Eden. In To a God Unknown, Steinbeck writes about Joseph Wayne, a rancher who was born on his father 's ranch and is one of four boys. Joseph is the second youngest of the four boys, his brother Benjy being the youngest. As Joseph matures, he becomes internally connected with the land and moves to California to start a family and build a house.
