In 1692, a group of young girls from Massachusetts named Elizabeth and Abigail, believed they were being possessed by the devil and falsely accused several woman, men and children of witchcraft. Once the men and woman were accused they were ordered to attend multiple trials in which would be help in the Massachusetts general court. Once the men and woman were taken to trial they were proven guilty by the girls actions that proved the court these men and woman were apart of witchcraft. After the accuses were proven guilty in front of the court they were either held in prison and eventually died or hanged and died. There were multiple young girls who were apart of the witchcraft accusing other than just Elizabeth and Abigail.
Since the men were married they obviously the girls couldn't wait for them to go after there hand in marriage,so they went to a slave woman named Tituba she said that she could make the men that they desired drawn to them by practicing voodoo in the forest. They were caught by one of the village reverends and was asked for an explanation to what they were doing in the woods. Instead of telling the truth a girl named Abigail Williams said that they should lie about what happen a put all attention back into tituba. She accuses Elizabeth of bewitching her to kill her. The court will not kill her because she is pregnant but John Procter ends up being hanged because he was accused.
John Procter went to break things off with Abigail Williams because his wife found out about the affair and she accused Elizabeth of witchcraft hoping that Elizabeth would no longer stand in the way of their “love”. The only problem that interfered with her plan was that John didn’t feel that strongly for Abigail. He cared more deeply for his wife. John tried to get his wife out of jail by exposing the girl's secrets. His attempts don't go as planned and he is accused of witchcraft in the end. Abigail runs away and John is hanged, all because she wanted to be John's lover; she got multiple innocent people killed and ruined the village's balance. Elizabeth cannot be hanged because she is pregnant and the child inside her is innocent. John finds Abigail and tells her to stop all this nonsense and to never mention Elizabeth’s name in court again. Abigail is then found with a needle into her and blames it on Elizabeth. Soon enough John gets accused of witchcraft and has to confess to it or he will hang. While he’s in jail, Abigail asks him to run away with her to Boston so that they could be together and so that he wouldn’t get hung; John refuses.
John confesses to adultery in court to try to save Elizabeth when she is accused of witchcraft. By doing this, he is confessing to a serious sin. In this society, the church and government are one. This means that he could face a death sentence. He also confesses prove Abigail’s motive to kill Elizabeth and to expose her and save others from being accused by her.
