Another colonial author whose writing was based on his Christian faith was John Winthrop. He was one of the first group of puritans who arrived in Massachusetts in 1630. In his trip from England to America, he gave his sermon A Model of Christian Charity in which he invited the other people on the ship they were travelling, to be an example to the world based on their Christian ideology (91). The puritans had a big attachment to the bible, and they believed that the Scriptures and God were link to all the aspects of their lives such as giving, forgiving, lending, among others.

The people of America (colonists) were tired of being controlled by England. They wanted to be free and independent. They believed that they were able to control themselves and be their own country. They wanted England to let go of their control and to view them as independent and their own country.
In colonial America, written documents were one of the few primary sources of this time. All the way back to John Winthrop’s “A Model of Christian Charity’’ in the 1630’s. Winthrop’s sermon shows how the only way their colony will succeed is through God. Jonathan Edwards sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” shows people how powerful God is and what he capable of doing. George Washington shows that honesty, respect, and self-discipline are all values that colonial people live off of to survive in their new environment.
The New Englanders took religion seriously, making unitary laws according to Puritan standards. John Winthrop, later chosen as the first Massachusetts Bay Colony governor, was seeking religious freedom. Wishing to inspire the colonists to dwell in brotherly unity, he summoned them together to remind them “that if we [colonists] shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.” On the other hand, those in the Chesapeake region came for the wealth that America promised. They were there to become prosperous or die trying.
Between the years of 1750 to 1780, the british colonies were growing. People who came to America looked for rights and opportunities they did not have in Britain. People came for religious freedom and an opportunity to move up in society. Colonists believed America got more democratic than it was in the beginning. But the change was not as democratic as people thought.
Why would America consider itself charitable and a Christian nation? In that matter, John Winthrop was the assigned governor for the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the Britain colonial period; in addition, he was administered a position into leading a group of Puritans to make a functional colony on the New World. In the past, Winthrop was a devout Puritan that believed the idea that the soul is saved by God and was predetermined for them to be righteous or sinned; in fact, “In Model of Christian Charity,” he believed in the aspect of people being poor and wealthy was chosen by God and not be their willingness as a person, and they should have humbleness and mercy towards one another as a Christian should. John Winthrop and his followers established a society that would be an example to many more societies to come. They came to New England to create a place that was occupied by people approved by God and whom abided by God’s laws. Winthrop knew that this colony would have to be completely different from England, since at the time, England was in chaos, therefore, he learned from all of the mistakes England made, religiously and politically, and planned a colony that would thrive under the ruling of God and his worshipers. Everyone knew that this was a massive undertaking that may not promise them the success they were looking for, but the Puritans had to get out of England because they knew that God would eventually punish them for the evils
It could be said that the first colonization in American era occurred in the early seventeenth century when John Winthrop and other Puritan leaders sailed in Bay to solidify the settlement that would become the colony of Massachusetts Bay. On board, Winthrop delivered a sermon entitled “A Model of Christian Charity” that presented a phrase that remains at the heart of American foreign policy. Winthrop implored those traveling to be “like a city on a hill”, by creating a society that would serve as an example to others around the world. The religious fervor of the first colonization was reinforced during the great awakening of beginning of the 18th century, which contributed to the freedom that joined the American Revolution. The revolution was a “conspiracy of reason and faith”.
Colonist had their reasons for coming over to the New World. For many it was for economic growth, religious freedoms, or escaping the political and social systems of their native lands. They enjoyed their freedoms and liberties as new societies while being developed, but it was not an easy accomplishment. The colonist worked hard on developing their towns on their beliefs and values far from the reach of England. As time went on, there was growing tension between the thirteen American colonies and England, their motherland.
