In the book “The Giver” by Lois Lowry, Jonas's community is a dystopia because of the harsh rules. The rules change everything in life, like having a job, eating the same foods, no uniqueness, living in identical households, and other things. For example, every house unit is the exact same and if somebody in Jonas’s community wanted to eat lobster, they would have to wait until a day when it is served to the whole community. In Jonas's community, everyone gets assigned to an assignment at the age of twelve, for example Jonas received the assignment of “Receiver of Memory”, which he wasn’t expecting because the assignment was very rare. This makes Jonas’s community an dystopian community because you do not get the chance to choose your own assignment, and if you do not like the assignment, you have to wait to apply for another assignment. …show more content…
When you reach the house of old, and you reach a specific age, for example, 75, you will be released which means that you do not die from natural causes, but will die from lethal injection by an assigned nurturer in your community. If you happen to do something really bad or by accident you can get released from the incident which makes Jonas’s community a dystopia.
