The artist that wrote the song for my music project is called song Simani. I thought I’d tell you about the artist first so you could get a bit of backstory on the song “Music and Friends” or any other songs you have heard by Simani. Simani is a duo band (two members) who focus their music on their Newfoundland and Labrador culture that they were raised in. The band had come together in 1977 with members Bud Davidge and Sim Savory. Sim was a kind hardworking man who never gave up through all the struggles in his life.
That band had Hank Majewski on rhythm guitar, Billy Thompson on drums, and Frank Cattone on accordion. Inbetween 1954 and 1956 they performed and recorded under a variety of names but eventually they settled on the name The Four Seasons. From 1956 up until 1958 the group had stayed together, performing in lounges and clubs under the name The Four Lovers along with recording on various record labels with names: Frankie Valley and the Travelers, Frankie Valley, the Village Voices. In 1959 the group started working with the songwriter/producer Bob Crewe, where they primarily did session work. Later that year the Four Lovers were performing in Baltimore on the same stage as the Royal Teens, The Royal Teens were currently riding on their success of “Short Shorts”. That song which was co-written by the then 15-year-old Bob Gaudio, who was also the Royal Teen’s keyboardist.
Bing Crosby started the song first, and Al Jolson followed. Al Jolson sang louder and extended the notes at the ends of the phrase. For example, Jolson exaggerated the words “played in ragtime” when he sang the phrase “And if you care to hear the Swanee River played in ragtime.” He also used exaggerated gestures, which is appropriate for the large theaters where he learned his technique. Furthermore, his loudness and exaggeration made him more stand out comparing to Bing Crosby.
Today in class we viewed the fifth episode of Ken Burns Jazz documentary, Swing Pure Pleasure. In the late 1930’s Swing became the new Jazz among the young teenage Americans. With its popularity came fame for band leaders and bands. Bands started touring, band leaders were seen as rock stars, and swing became the obsession of many young Americans. This new fame wasn’t all flashing lights many bands and band leaders faced hardships in their career.
As a good song, it is important to take a broad view of songs. The songs consist of the lyrics and the tune, but also of all the contexts in which a song is created, experienced, produced, and consumed. After listening the song All I Got 's Gone, the singer used the form of a song to interpret the social situation in the United States at that time, and preserved it for us to appreciate. The song was surrounding the life of citizens during the great depression, which was written in united state in 1934. According to the name of the song, the name is clearly enough to show his mood after all of things the writer got has gone.

After viewing the documentary and listening to each song by Rodgers and Hammerstein the song that made the most impact on me was the song “Some Enchanted Evening.” The song consists of very smooth and romantic melodies. Due to that I am a hopeless romantic I really enjoy the song lyrics and melody. The song was very catchy that I ended up singing the song for the rest of my day.

In Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s “Molly” performance, I noticed that he performed it to a rhythm that is very unique to African culture. Many of the instruments that were played in conjunction with his performance in order to enhance his performance were instruments that are very popular in African culture. Joseph’s imitation of the African dances that he witness, prior to Molly asking him to distract the dancers they encountered, was very similar to the original dances that African’s would perform. Prior to being assimilated into American culture, many of the slaves of the past would dance like this at African religious ceremonies. However, these dances became more modified the longer Africans remained in America.
Melody is a young girl who has a mental and physical disabilities, she can 't walk, talk, and has no control of her body. This has made her life very complicated in many ways. Something that is awful about her disability is that Melody is super smart and can 't share this with the world. Melody is mad because her parents and doctors because they think she is just another stupid little kid with no brain. This is truly difficult on her because Nobody is able to understand how smart she is, and why she does what she does.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
The song Beds are Burning by Midnight oil is a political song about giving native Australian lands back to the the Pintupi. The Pintupi were one of the very last people to come from the desert. These people began voluntarily moving from the Gibson Desert to settlements around the 1930ss. Many more were forcibly moved during the 1950's and 1960's to the Papunya settlement after they did not leave in the 1930’s. In 1981 they left to return to their own country, and established the Kintore community.
Hip-hop is an influential form of music that displays an artist’s honest and revealing story that many of the general public can relate to. One of the many songs that I can relate to is “Love Yourz” written by J Cole. The song talks about how Cole reflects on the most important things in life such as love and happiness. He realizes that the money and fame didn’t bring him the happiness he desired. To gain true happiness, he needed to appreciate himself and those that love him.
