Junior Achievement Involvement Report

My involvement with Junior Achievement of Central Ontario started when a representative from Junior Achievement came and spoke to my economics class about a program called Junior Achievement Company Program. Basically it is a program where high school students, with the help of volunteers from the local business community, will learn how to create, manage, and then liquidate a business in 18 weeks. Throughout the course of this program, we will solve real business challenges, maintain and analyze financial records, develop a business plan, appoint a management team, and sell shares.

The first few weeks of the company program is about getting to know whom you will be working with for the next 18 weeks. As well, we are assigned supervisors to advise and teach us things about running a business. On top of this, there are also elections for the management team of the company, meaning elections for the President and Vice Presidents of the Company. I ran for Vice President of Human Resources, unfortunately, I lost by a couple votes. It is representative of the city we all live in, Mississauga. Similar to Toronto being called the Six, Mississauga is known as the Five, hence the name Fiveline. Our company decided we were going to sell apparel, such as long-sleeved T-shirts with a design created by the marketing department of our company. As the Manager of Production and Finance, I worked closely with the Vice Presidents of Finance and Production to pick a supplier and printing company four our clothing, and determine how much to sell our product for. The Finance department agreed we would charge $25.00 a shirt, so that we can earn a profit.
