Over the last few decades, the societal progress in the rights of LGBT+ people has been met with backlash from right-wing politicians, organizations, and media outlets. They have spread to many U.S. states and even some provinces, pushing their bigoted and anti-queer policies. They have attacked our healthcare system, the internet, and worst of all, our schools. Common misconceptions and stereotypes found online include trans/gay people being pedophiles, they are harmful, they are indoctrinating our kids, and, simply put, being queer is invalid and not okay. To prove this, it’s important to note that most kids and teens have access to social media. Regardless of whether this kind of education is taught, kids will discover LGBT+ identity through social media. And considering the seemingly small amount of support for queer people shown on social media, it’s likely they will find this topic through hateful, fear-mongering, and factually false sources. Examples of false sources include conservative commentators and organizations like Matt Walsh and Young America’s Foundation, and comment sections on even queer-supportive videos. Remember how it was statistically shown that a lack of sexual education causes more teen pregnancies? Well, it’s the same BS here. Not properly educating about a sensitive topic in hopes that it will “protect” kids ALWAYS has the opposite effect. It’s also a fact that there’s a ton of anti-LGBT rhetoric out there, coming from family, friends, and the media. Our opinions and thoughts are shaped by how our peers and the media want them to be.
