The article “Worldview of high-risk Juvenile Delinquents” written by Julie H. Goldberg is focused on the relationship between violent juvenile offenders and their devastating past experiences. The participants of this research were male adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18 incarcerated who were also in the high-risk offenders Unit of a juvenile hall. The study was to predict participants’ willingness to shoot. Preexisting risk factors (delinquency, exposure to violence, and victimization) was required to be factored into any findings. The state of delinquency among juveniles is a persistent and pervasive American social problem. According to a 1985 study conducted by Hawkins, Juvenile crime represents over 40% of the total arrests for major crimes, including burglary, rape and murder. This rate of juvenile incarceration mirrors that of adult incarceration. Today, courts ruled life without parole for non-homicide crime is unconstitutional. Some states allow experimenting with alternate sentencing options such as a “blended adult” portion of their sentence until they turn 21. Therefore the judge can keep track of the progress that the child had made and make as needed changes to the sentencing. Juvenile court was developed largely because of the Illinois Supreme Court ruling in People v. Turner. Jail, on the other hand, is a place for the confinement of people who had been accused or convicted of a crime ages eighteen and older, depending on the state. There are over 5,000 jails and prisons located in the United States, over 2.2 million people are currently in U.S jails or prison, and over 2.7 million children have parents who are in prison.
