Essentially, it is obvious St. Louis City juvenile justice has taken great strides in ensuring their clients partake in juvenile justice reform. Certainly, over the years this has been the center piece of the institution in providing a plethora of services, which compassionately meets many of the needs of its youth. However, despite the history and longevity associated with the St. Louis City’s juvenile system, including the uniqueness of the services they provide within the institution today. The need to further develop facility resources, which provides adequate programming and additional tools for its detainees and staff is continual. One of the non-traditional jobs in westmoreland county is portrayed by Michele Wentzel a female juvenile probation. I was lucky enough to get the chance to interview her. One of the questions she was asked was, Have you ever been hurt or threatened on the job? Michele answered that she was never physically hurt, but threatened many times by students and parents. Another topic discussed was, what is one of the most interesting probation cases you worked?
Powerful or Powerless The novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding is an interesting novel that shows many different circumstances that happen to civilization, for better or for worse, through the actions of children. Ralph, the main character, and Piggy open up the novel, strolling through the woods on this island that they have been stranded on after surviving a horrible plane crash. From their knowledge, there were no adults that survived the crash, but there were other boys on the island that they had yet to meet. By coincidence, they found a perfect conch shell in a pond nearby, and they summoned up their first meeting where Ralph and Piggy met Jack, a character that thinks he is born to be the leader and doesn’t care what anybody else thinks about it.
My career goal is to become a lawyer in the Juvenile Court System, my goal is to be able to help children in anyway I can. I feel that children are always misunderstood and that all they need is a little bit of guidance to be able help them. Per the website Study.com (n.d.), Juvenile Probation Officers’ primary job duties are supervising youth who have been in the juvenile justice system. Typically, these juvenile offenders have recently been released from juvenile detention and have returned to live with their families. The purpose of a Juvenile Probation Officer is to prevent the juvenile from reoffending. To prevent reoffending the Juvenile Probation Officer regularly meets with the juvenile and their families to ensure the juvenile is following the guidelines of the courts ("Juvenile Probation Officers | Job Description and Duties," n.d.).
As a Probation and Parole Officer, my duties is to enforce the law but primary is to help individuals with social resources so they can become productive member of society. Probation and Parole Officer should communicate with other law enforcement officer to gain information or gain more detail about the person that the Probation Officer is supervising. Police Officers serve an integral role in the criminal justice system, and their duty is to arrest individuals and bring them up on charges. If the individual is adjudicated in court, then the individual enters the Delaware Correctional system. Every individual will be placed in their correct supervision level as set forth by SENTAC and sentencing order.
The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) protect children and help to prevent and control the juvenile delinquency. Not only does it improve the juvenile justice system but also they want to make sure that kids are healthy and free from violence. OJJDP promote things they can do for the youth justice system and the safety they can provide for them. They make it their mission to promote what they do to let the youth out there know that there are people that care for them and are willing to help. OJJDP was established through the Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention (JDP) by congress, amended in the public law 93-415, act of 1974.
Competency to Stand Trial In criminal court, when the question of CST is posed, the court requests an evaluation from a mental health professional on knowing whether the defendant has any mental illness or mental defect that would interfere with their ability to participate in proceedings of the court (Pillay, 2014). The court also seeks evidence from a mental health professional on whether the defendant had a mental illness or mental defect at the time of the examination, and by that, likely, the time of the trial (Pillay, 2014). There are standardized assessment tools that have been developed to help assess adult competency (Baranoski, 2003). Although there is no statutory distinction between adult and child competency, most courts recognize that cases with adolescents are different (Baranoski, 2003). In this case, a competency evaluation is adjusted to meet the needs of the juvenile and the court (Baranoski, 2003).
There are times when almost everyone asks what is the purpose of a juvenile probation officer; what role juvenile probation officers have, and what happens when you are on probation under the age of 18 and how a juvenile probation officer works with you. If you or you know someone who is in trouble, knowing how probation works isn’t always a bad thing. The job of a juvenile probation officer is very meaningful. It involves performing several different duties and putting in a fair amount of hours, but it provides a unique opportunity to intervene in the lives of criminal offenders at a time when they may still be open to reform.
There are many children in the world who are being put behind bars and detained for alleged wrongdoing without protections they are entitled to. Throughout the world, children are charged and sentenced for actions that should not be considered as adult crimes. Here in the United States, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is age 12. Law enforcement officials and those in the juvenile justice system nationwide tend to mistreat underage individuals by trying cases while working through the lens of an adult. Unfair punishments are still handed down domestically, which is in violation of Supreme Court law.
Imagine being a child imprisoned for committing a crime for which you did not understand the consequences. Alone and afraid, with only hardened criminals and psychopaths as adult role models, you live in fear. Through a vicious combination of physical, sexual, emotional, and mental abuse, there is no option but to turn back to crime as an adult, and continue the cycle. This is a daily reality for thousands of American juveniles. Yet, we continue to call it the juvenile justice system.
The juvenile justice system has made numerous of ethical issues when managing juvenile offenders. The issue with the juvenile justice system is the laws and rules that govern it. It has led to years of controversial debate over the ethical dilemmas of the juvenile corrections system, and how they work with youth offenders. The number of minors entering the juvenile justice system is increasing every month. The reasons why the juvenile justice system faces ethical dilemmas is important and needs to be addressed: (1) a vast proportion of juveniles are being tried and prosecuted as adults; (2) the psychological maturation of the juvenile to fully comprehend the justice system; and (3) the factors that contribute to minorities being adjudicated in the juvenile justice system are more likely than White offenders.
For many years and throughout the United States children have been disobeying rules as well as the law. Children are usually taught right from wrong but there are some that still choose to do what they want to do and go against their parent’s rules and the laws that are set within the states that they reside. So, once a child has made the decision to break a law and commit a crime, they are considered to be a juvenile delinquent. Most juveniles are either given rehabilitation or they are placed in a juvenile detention center, but it only depends on the type of charge they are receiving from the crime they have committed. Throughout this research I will be discussing a case of a juvenile who was waived to adult status.
I couldn 't be more grateful for the opportunity to experience Taylor County Juvenile Probation Department. Unfortunately, my internship did not start until the end of March due to a departmental audit. However, the experience and exposure I got within a month was enough to give the insight and information I needed in order to truly understand the job of a juvenile probation officer. What I had previous read in educational books regarding juvenile probation does not compare to the knowledge I gained when working with the Taylor County Juvenile Probation Department. During this month I had exposure to department policies, juvenile detention and probation, court hearings, intake, and the Taylor County Learning Center (TCLC).
