Recently I took the time to watch a Kanye West music video, from his most recent album, “The Life of Pablo”. I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I knew there was a high likelihood of it being extremely random and slightly offensive. I had listened to the album before watching this video, and enjoyed it, despite its odd uniqueness in comparison to the rest of Kanye’s work. While I sat down to watch the video that had been created for the song “Fade” I was confused about the message he was trying to convey, and not particularly sure how to formulate an opinion on the video. It is a simple medium to get a point across, and this simplicity is what makes music so effective and moving. It forces the listener to use their imagination about what the song means. No ideas are being shoved into the head of the listener by someone else when they are only listening to the music. They have no choice but to create an image of whatever they are hearing in their mind. In the song “Runaway” by Galantis, a music video could easily be created that would impress the viewer’s visual side of his/her brain, but when I hear this song without a visual, I enjoy it much more, because my mind is creating what it wants to associate with this song. I can imagine what is flying around outside of the ship based on the lyrics of the song. This is what I love about purely relying on the music. This scene is too vague in my imagination be recreated by a tech guy and computer, even if it was myself attempting to recreate it. The scene that I associate with this specific song is difficult to describe, impossible to physically recreate, and is entirely unique to my imagination. No one else that listens to the song will imagine exactly what I imagine when I listen to
