Karl Marx a revolutionary, socialist, historian and economist once said, “We know that the individual is weak, but we also know that the society is power.” Marx was born on May 5, 1883, in Trier, Western Germany. Son of Heinrich and Henrietta Marx, Karl was the oldest surviving boy of nine children. Through his theories and works, he is thought to be one of the founding thinkers of sociology and is widely known for his critiques of industrial capitalism and concept of material capitalism.
Karl Marx had a average family life. Marx’s father, Heinrich, a successful Jewish lawyer, was devoted to Enlightenment, a European intellectual movement of the 17th and 18th century. Specifically, Heinrich was devoted to both Kant and Voltaire, who advocated for the constitution of Prussia. Karl’s mother, Henrietta, was born in Holland. Both of her parents were Jewish and came from a long line of Rabbis. A few years after Heinrich and Henrietta married, Heinrich was baptized as a Protestant in fear of losing his job as one of the most respected lawyers in Trier. With no place to go, Marx decided to “start over” and moved to London where he was denied citizenship. Although Britain denied his permanent residence, he remained in the country until his death.
