When the time comes to pick who will fight in the Hunger Games, Katniss’ sister, Prim, gets picked. Katniss runs to her and screams that she volunteers to take her place. For the boy tribute, Peeta Mellark is chosen. Katniss remembers how years earlier, while searching for food for her family in the garbage bins behind the town shops, Peeta gave her bread from his family’s bakery. The tributes, Katniss and Peeta, say good-bye to everyone and board a train to the Capitol. Once Katniss and Peeta get to the Capitol, they are met by their stylist, Cinna, who designed their outfits for the opening ceremony. Their outfits are a huge hit at the ceremony and they become fan favorites.
Then Katniss and Peeta attend training for the games with Career Tributes. Career Tributes have trained their whole lives for the Hunger Games. Later, the tributes are interviewed by Caesar Flickerman, a television host. In his interview, Peeta reveals that he’s had a crush on Katniss for several years.

She is lifted into the arena and the games officially begin. Katniss hikes for a the first day then sets up camp. That night the Career Tributes kill someone. Katniss is surprised to see Peeta with them. The next day, Katniss is looking for water but she’s unable to find it. She searches for hours until eventually she finds a stream. That night while Katniss is hiding in a tree, she sees a girl named Rue. Rue points out a nest of tracker jackers, wasps made by the Capitol. Katniss cuts the rope and kills the Career Tributes. Katniss sees Rue again and forms a bond. When Katniss doesn’t find Rue at a meeting spot they agreed to meet at, she goes looking for Rue only to find her just as another tribute stabs her with a spear. Katniss angry, kills the other tribute, and when Rue dies, she covers her body in flowers. Katniss is very upset all the next
