Katniss’s father died in a mine explosion; however, before he died he was teaching Katniss how to shoot a bow and a arrow. Katniss is now using this skill to hunt in the woods (which is forbidden and you can be punished by death) to supply for her family. This shows that Katniss is very brave. Katniss loves her sister Prim every much, in fact so much that Prim was chosen to go play in the annual Hunger Games to represent District 12 and Katniss was so brave and bold she volunteered herself because she knew Prim would not survive a second in the Hungers Games.

The beginning of the book is situated in North America. North America is destroyed and was split into 12 Districts ruled by the Capital. The Capital is an oppressive government that owns 12 Districts. The Districts are ranked by their numbers. As you got through the numbers the one that is doing the best is district 1 and the district that is doing the worst is District 12.

In the dystopian landscape in which the book is set, children between the ages of twelve and eighteen must register themselves for a random selection for a fight to the death. Even from the beginning, Katniss was breaking societal expectations; one example of which being when she volunteered when her younger sister Primrose was selected. Being from such a poor district, Katniss was not expected to do well in training for the games, but she pulled a very high score when she shot an arrow towards the game-makers. In the reaping in district 12 she volunteers for the game in order to spare her sister Primrose. Once she’s inside the Hunger Games arena she’s forced to kill to survive but there’s only problem, her friend Peeta Mellark gets cast into the games too. In the middle of the games, Katniss finds herself in a love triangle with her longtime friend back in district 12 Gale. This made her play a role of love for Peeta while his love for her was real, this then became all and act to survive for Katniss Everdeen.
