After reading “Kids need structure”, by Collin Powell and “Freedom” by Maria Montessori, one can see the differences in the views of educating children. While Collin Powell thinks the kids need structure, Maria Montessori feels like the children need to learn on their own In Montessori’s “Freedom”, she says “in the same way children are human being whom respect is due”(27-28). She was saying before that the children respect the adult but the adult never respects the child. She is saying that the adult should show respect back. She also says that “enthusiasm is the secret of real guidance” (8). In this she is telling us that enthusiasm is how we learn and how we can view things. She also thinks that the ways through life is to learn by doing things yourself sometimes. Where Montessori is talking about respecting the children and showing them to be enthusiastic, Collin Powell wants the students to respect the older person. For example, Collin says “when they raise their hand, i say ‘come up here’”(11). He has them go to the front so they can say what they need to say while looking straight ahead and loud so the class hears what they need to say. He then says that “i’m your daddy and mommy” (29). This is saying that the teacher needs to teach you but let you learn on your own sometimes. She wants the students to figure it out on their own without a lot of the teachers help. Montessori then says “wait while observing, that is the motto for the educator”(16). By this she is saying observe the students while not interacting too much. She wants the students to learn on their own but wants the teacher to no interact but make sure they stay on task or stay from going too far off the topic but other than that to not interact too
