In Maria Viramontes’ Under the Feet of Jesus Estrella is a confused, angry girl who is attempting to figure everything out. Estrella is unable to figure anything out without the help of Perfecto Flores, but with his help she is able to create some understanding about the importance of education and becomes less angry. Viramontes uses tone and figurative language to help show Estrella’s growth and development. The beginning of the passage has an angry tone.
With Sugar the struggle was easy, yet with Silvia a lot more difficult. It was children like Silvia that Ms. Moore knew she would have to be a bit more extreme in not only teaching her verbally, but also showing her the difference in knowing the “real meaning of money, how to earn it and spend it”. As an educator, the challenge doesn’t only apply to the immediate family. Teachers need to build relationships with the children so that children understand boundaries with their class teacher. Piaget (1936, cited Mcleod 2015) also suggests that there are two types of child to adult relationships. The first type of relationships applies to a teacher and a child’s relationship. He believes that constraint is a type of relationship in which the child is expected to respect the adult. The adult (being the teacher) then uses authority to socialise with the child and to instruct the child on what to do.

While Powell is trying to say that in 18 weeks of school children learn how to admire their teacher as they are also mature as they now also have skill. This then leads to causing the child to improve. For this is how Powell teaches his education as it is different to Montessori teaching. As Montessori said “It is necessary for the teacher to guide the child without letting him feel her presence too much, so that she may be always ready to supply the desired help, but may never be the obstacle between the child and his experience”(Montessori Para 1).
He will become more mature and begin to understand the world around him. Next, Montessori wants the adults to “ ...wait, and always ready to share in both joy and the difficulties which the child experiences”. The teacher should be proud when the child overcomes the obstacles in front of him. They should celebrate with him, encourage him to move on, and learn many other things. When they are in a difficult situation then the teacher should be there helping him and guide him towards the right path.
Through this lesson it has been factored in the interactions that will be involved and the promote of caring relationships and positive self-esteem, the results of the experiences involved and opportunities that are consolidate with the learning, providing new and exciting challenged, all within an activity that is familiar and regular, because this helps with the children’s comfort and promotes a sense of belonging and security (Acara, 2012). Pedagogy and the curriculum content are normally determined by the teachers based on what they have observed of the children’s ‘needs’ when then determines the children development stage, their strengths, weaknesses, and their interests. Kids should be aware of the schools they attend, diverse or not, and education systems have a chance to break segregation from the beginning and bring all ethnicities together. Montessori is advocating for an education system that sees the freedom that the child manifests and allows them to express their creativity. She believes that the freedom they attain from proper education releases their inner ambitions allowing them to lead a successful life. Her idea of education is that “The school must permit the free, natural manifestations of the child if in the school scientific pedagogy is to be born”.
Montessori uses several allusions and word choices to get her point across in the text. How does Maria Montessori use allusions & word choice to impact the reader? To begin with, Montessori used allusions that came from the bible to try get the reader to connect to the text. She used an allusion from Matthew 19:14, stating, “Do not hinder them from coming, since, if they are left free and unhampered, they will come”. People may have already heard the quote from Matthew 19:14 may have started to think differently about children and think how important they are to the future.
After reading “Kids need structure”, by Collin Powell and “Freedom” by Maria Montessori, one can see the differences in the views of educating children. While Collin Powell thinks the kids need structure, Maria Montessori feels like the children need to learn on their own In Montessori’s “Freedom”, she says “in the same way children are human being whom respect is due”(27-28). She was saying before that the children respect the adult but the adult never respects the child. She is saying that the adult should show respect back.
