King Arthur Myth or Legend What is a legend? A legend is a story that just so happens to be larger than life itself. The story continues to be passed down from generation to generation. Legend is a term that means, “to read” Latin legers. A legend could be anyone from a superstar to a teacher at a school. A myth on the other hand is a story passed down from generation to generation that can’t actually be proven. A good source would have had to be there to prove that the person was actually real. One myth that has been passed down from the earlier years is king Arthur. There are several different views about king Arthur whether he was a legendary British leader or an actual person. After the death of Uther there was not a king ruling England. “ Merlin had placed a sword in a stone, saying that whoever drew it out would be king.” (coghlan 40) Arthur actually pulled the sword out of the stone. Merlin went crazy when he found out that Arthur real father had gotten sick and passed. Merlin took Arthur under his wings when he was a couple days old. He felt that it was not right to bring Arthur in world the under adultery. Merlin felt it was best for Arthur to be raised by a knight named Sir Ector. Sir Ector already had a son named Sir Kay, so he already had the knowledge of raising a child. No one really suspected that Arthur wasn’t really Sir Ector son because he had been with him so long. Merlin only wanted what was best for Arthur so that is why he put the sword in the stone. He did not want anyone to find out the truth about Arthur. Sir Ector had become the father figure to Arthur that he needed in his life.
