David was born in Bethlehem to an ordinary family. His father was merely a farmer and a sheep breeder. David may have had an ordinary childhood, but was recognized for his talent in many areas. He could play the lyre well, he was good in battle, and he was good with words. He was found by royal courtiers, who recognized his talent, and thought he could be put to good use. Soon after they found him, a war started between Israel and the Philistines, a neighboring country. The Philistines challenged them to send out someone who was brave and strong enough to beat their Giant, Goliath. No one thought Goliath could be beat, but David thought otherwise. He decided the best solution was to have him killed. However, fortunately for David, Saul had a son who knew about his plans, Jonathan, who respected David, and warned him about his father's cruel plans. David escaped as fast as he could. Later he decided to work for the Philistine king, and become a vassal. Unfortunately not many were faithful in his loyalty to the Philistines, and David was not meant to come to battle against Saul. Saul and Jonathan were both killed in battle, as well as the Philistine king. More trust had been established in David, and the Philistines decided they would benefit from having David as their king. In the North, Saul's son, Ish-Bosheth was anointed king, and war continued until he was murdered. With the death of Saul's son, the elders came together and decided that David should become king over all of Israel. David had many tasks to carry out as king, but one of his first was making Jerusalem his new capital David ruled in power, and after 40 years of ruling, his youngest son, Solomon, was appointed the new king. Solomon prayed to God for wisdom, and his wish was granted, for it was not a wish that would benefit only
