Many other blues electric guitar players who followed him were influenced by the sophisticated soloing technique he established, which featured shimmering vibrato, staccato picking, and fluid string bending. Riley B. King was born into a family of impoverished sharecroppers on a plantation close to the Mississippi Delta village of Itta Bena. King’s mother moved him to live in the neighboring hill country of Kilmichael, Mississippi, when he was just five years old. He was working in the field as an adult by the age of seven. When his mother passed away, he was just nine years old. African-American church music served as a source of inspiration for him. His preacher taught him the basics of playing the guitar, and he had aspirations of becoming a gospel singer.
