I work at Kossuth Middle School located in a small rural area of Alcorn County. Today I met with our principal, SR, to discuss the PDK/Gallup poll. During this meeting we discussed a few important issues needing resolved within our school community. He feels it is important to establish a positive environment between the school and the community, something he has been working on since beginning his work with the Alcorn School District. When he first came it was difficult because morale in and out of this school was at an all-time low, but he has seen it slowly begin to turn around in the last few years. According to the survey most feel that too much time is spent on standardized testing instead of providing students with an environment that promotes authentic learning. Community members also feel that students should be learning material to help them be productive in the workforce as well as prepared to compete in a world market once they have completed their educational career. Most favor the common core standards because they are the same for all schools that have implemented them making it easier should their child need to move to another school district. The superintendent in our district meets on a regular basis with our principal in order to remain informed of any issues with members of the school community. He trusts each principal to determine the methods that work best in his/her school. Only if an issue arises concerning the entire district does he take over and notify the media when needed.
