December, 20th. 2017 Founded in 1865, this group is well-known for being a white supremacist organization initially formed to tackle reconstruction in the South. The Ku Klux Klan terrorized the the world as a whole starting with the United States. Crimes committed by the Klan, were gruesome, and made the activities made a huge impact that shaped the society we have today. As mentioned earlier, the first wave of the Klan initially assembled as a secret society called the Ku Klux Klan on December 24th, 1865 in Pulaski, Tennessee. At the top of the Klan, the “ Imperial Wizard” would wear either white or blue. Members who wore green or red, were known as the “Grand Dragon”. Security would be seen in black, also known as “Knighthawk”, and variety of other colours. On the left of the costume lies a label. On the label has a cross on it, representing the Christian cross, and in each corner of the cross has a K in it, signifying the members of the klan. The drop of blood marks the shed of blood from when Jesus died on the cross. Members truly believed in Jesus dying on the cross for White Anglo- Saxon Protestant people.
The activities of the Klansmen promoted intimidation, and violence aimed towards African Americans, immigrants and catholics from securing any wealth, social status, and political power. The members of the KKK promoted intimidation by a ritual used in medieval times known as “cross burning”. They believed the burning of the crucifix insisted “ faith in Christ”. The burning cross soon became a hate symbol in America becoming a hallmark of the KKK.
