Today as we live in America, we see more structural and beneficial working conditions than other countries. The one reason why the America has profound working conditions is because of labor unions. There are the large numbers of labor unions that stand for their workers’ rights and keep their discipline in working places. The one of the largest and famous union is ‘National Education Association of the United States’ which is the labor union organized by public school teachers since 1857. I remember my high school history teacher told me that she is in the national education association. She explained why this labor union and other labor unions exist until today. Individuals are less powerful than groups; workers, thereby, have started to organized by themselves to speak out their rights to their companies effectively. According to Joe Weinlick, a union gives power through a collective voice to workers and negotiate with companies, so companies can maintain their productivities. Companies also need labor unions to know what their employees are thinking about them. For example, if there is a labor union in its company or among the nation, the labor union speaks out its demand in order to obtain benefits and to fix unfairness. The company realizes what employees demand; therefore, the company negotiate with its workers to maintain productivity. During the negotiation, there is a temporary tension going between employees and employers which is often called, ‘counterproductive’. When the negotiation falls, this situation could lead to even worse situation, such as a strike. Although it shows workplace as hostility rather than cooperation and collaboration, a labor union should continuously speak out its voice for following reason. A company could operate its environment as an unfairly by paying them low wages, creating bad working conditions, or both.
