I attended school at Lafayette High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. It has more students than any high school in Louisiana with about 2500 students enrolled. Lafayette High is also home to the gifted program of the parish as well as a health academy which offers students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with various aspects of the medical field and provides them with experience in hospitals. Finally, the school offers a myriad of extracurriculars for students to participate in outside of school hours. I am proud to say that I was a part of the gifted program at Lafayette High and had the opportunity to study under some great teachers. Most of my favorite teachers shared very similar qualities. Besides being an opportunity to better myself musically, it taught me a lot of lessons and skills that I still use to this day. Most importantly, I learned how to set and achieve personal goals. Oftentimes I would be presented with a goal and it was up to me to practice and prepare on my own with little to no guidance from my teachers. This was probably the most valuable lesson I learned from band. I tend to see myself as a generally level-headed individual with a good work ethic. But overall, I think my biggest weakness is being social in a casual environment. I hope that throughout my studies I can overcome this personal barrier. As far as my future goes, I’d like to earn a masters degree in gifted education at some point in the future and teach English as a second language in Asia for a period of time. Throughout my schooling, I have been enrolled in both gifted and regular courses. I think this is one of the things that sets me apart from my colleagues. I know what its like to be in both classroom scenarios and have personally observed different teachers react to both types of students and got to see firsthand which methods were the most successful.
