Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Report

The purpose of this report is to analyze and provide recommendation to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This report focuses on improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the LMVPD through analyzation of it management style, community policing efforts, and the use of excessive force. Adopting such an approach won’t solve every problem facing police departments today, however, it provides department with a new approach to further achieve their vision of becoming “the safest community in America”.

The success of any business or organization is strongly dependent upon the proper management. Management has a significant influence of the employees they are responsible for managing.

The publication identifies innovative, traditional, supportive, and active as four different styles of management that impact the behaviors of subordinates. Of the four styles, innovative supervisory best describes Sheriff Lombardo management skills of the LVMPD. Innovative supervisors are described as being more opening to the development of relationships with their subordinates (U.S. Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs, 2003). These supervisors have very positive views of personnel. Innovative supervisors are constantly encouraging their officer to embrace new philosophies. These supervisors are believers of strong problem-solving skills, and community policing. Compared to other three supervisory styles, innovative supervisors are more in agreeance that a good patrol officer will seek to discover what residence view as major issues in their neighborhoods. A criminal justice professor at the University of Nevada commends Sheriff Lombardo for being ahead of his time. William H. Sousa said that Lombardo is part of group of reform-minded police chiefs and sheriffs who’s focuses include improving community relations and raising training standards. Sousa also said, “I think of him as a progressive chief,” “He has made a greater effort at transparency, instead of the old ‘this is police business,’ and preventing access to everyone” (Medina, Smith & Williams, 2017). Details of Sheriff Lombardo management styles emerged while he was thrown center stage. Sheriff Lombardo oversaw the investigation related the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history in 2017. The sheriff was described as tight lipped, blunt, methodical and lawman (Medina, Smith, & Williams, 2017). During his interviews with the press, Lombardo constantly reiterated that the rights and safety of his community was one his main focused. This highlighted the sheriffs focus and community relations. Lombardo is also credit for his problem-solving skills, which is also highlighted as a quality of an innovative supervisor. Lombardo took over the LMVP at a time where it was heavily scrutinized by the Justice Department for frequent police shootings.
