The Case of Hae Min Lee On January 13, 1999, a teenage girl named Hae Min Lee was reported missing when she never showed up to pick up her little cousin from kindergarten. Her body was found in Leakin Park in Baltimore, Maryland on February 9, 1999. Six weeks after her body was found, her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed was arrested for her murder. Adnan served 23 years in prison and then in 2022, he was released and cleared of all charges. His conviction was overturned after a DNA test excluded Adnan’s DNA from Hae’s body at the time of the murder. Years later, they tested the shoes, and no traces of Adnan’s DNA were found on them. The police interviewed and interrogated many people while investigating this case. The goal of interviews and interrogations is to determine the truth. The different people that were interviewed were Adnan, Aisha, who was Hae’s best friend, Don, who was Hae’s boyfriend, Don’s stepmother and manager, Adnan’s coach, Debbie, who was a school friend of Hae, Hae’s stepfather, French teacher, and uncle. All of those individuals provided insight into their connection with Hae and information about the type of person she was. Don, her boyfriend at the time, was questioned about his whereabouts, and he said he was at work. His stepmother, who was also his boss, confirmed this to the police. For Adnan, it could have been just any other normal day. The police then questioned two of Hae’s best friends and asked them about the relationship between Adnan and Hae. Becky was one of Hae’s friends and she said that the relationship consisted of teasing, handholding, and happiness. She described the relationship as a very generic teenage relationship. Hae’s best friend, Aisha, told the police that Adnan seemed to be overly involved with Hae. She said that Adnan would show up to her friends’ houses when they were hanging out and constantly paged her when she was out with them as well. She described to the police one specific time when Adnan showed up at a girl’s trip. Aisha said that Hae never minded and that no one found it too weird. Hae wrote a diary entry and in the entry, she described that time as romantic and stated that she loved Adnan.
