“Marijuana has become quite a popular topic, in term of politics. There are some who want it legalized, and some who think it should stay illegal. As of June 19, 2015, marijuana is legal in 23 states for medical purposes, and four states for recreational use. Marijuana should be legal in all 50 states, because it can boost the economy, free up police resources, and put less money into organized crime’s pockets. It would be a win-win for citizens and the government. Prohibition has failed to control the use and domestic production of marijuana. The government has tried to prevent marijuana use for over 75 years and yet, marijuana is now used by over 25 million people annually. An object is more valuable if it is illegal, then if it were legal. This can be seen during the prohibition, where the price of alcohol spiked. Once prohibition ended the prices fell back down. If marijuana was less expensive, there would be less of an incentive to sell it. With that sales among teenagers would drop along with their exposure to other, more dangerous drugs. Marijuana is not a lethal drug and has less risk than alcohol, which is legal in all 50 states. It is established scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans. Marijuana overdoses are almost impossible and marijuana is not nearly as addictive as alcohol or tobacco. It has positive values, such as medical use and for recreational use with mild side effects. Many people use marijuana because they have made the decision that it would be beneficial for their mental or physical health. Marijuana provides relief from pain, nausea, spasticity, and other symptoms for many individuals who have not been treated successfully with conventional medication. Many adults prefer marijuana to the use of alcohol for a mild and moderate way to relax. Adults who use marijuana choose to because they want to, and it has a relatively low dependence liability and easy-to-manage side effects. Many marijuana users develop a tolerance to most of marijuana’s side effects. Those who can’t handle the side-effect just stop using the substance. Those who use marijuana have decided that the benefits outweigh the draw-backs. One of the biggest risks to marijuana users is the risk of being arrest.
