Every day, 3,287 teens try marijuana for the first time. 3,287 young minds, many still in school, try a drug, nicknamed “the gateway drug” for the first time. A majority will stay hooked, and continue to use marijuana. But it doesn’t end there. Marijuana is called the “gateway drug” for a reason. And that reason is that it’s only the beginning of a life long addiction to drugs that become more and more lethal. Satisfaction decreases as the body builds up tolerance to each drug, and the doses become more and more dangerous,and the drugs become more and more lethal. 78% of the 2.4 million people who began using marijuana last year were between the ages of twelve and twenty. Those are adolescents and young adults, most of which are still in school. Consequently, those who use marijuana in school are less likely to graduate, more likely to get low grades. In fact, not only do grades, attendance, and performance in general decrease, but an adolescent’s IQ can drop as much as 8 points just from using marijuana on a frequent basis. This means people on drugs walking around in society, near our children, and near those we care about. We all understand that when we go outside, we would not want to see an individual using drugs and have to explain it to our children. If this drug were legalised, it would no longer be kept behind closed doors. This addictive drug use would be out for the world to see in public. ANd when things are publicized, people begin to copy what they see. This means children of younger and younger ages would see legal use of marijuana, and begin to utilise it before they themselves were legally
