In the novel Of Mice and Men each character carries a significant role. Slim, he the leader of the mule team and he is respected, Candy, he is a disabled old handyman, Crooks, the black stable worker who cares for the horses, Carlson, the insensitive ranch hand, Curley, the son of the ranch owner, Curley’s wife, disrespected lonely woman, Lennie, a migrant worker who is mentally handicapped, and George, who is a migrant worker trying to protect and care for Lennie. George is someone who stand out in the novel. During this time, no one would take the time to care for someone else, or to even have a bond with someone like George did with Lennie. George makes sure that Lennie has no problems with anyone, but he doesn’t always succeed at this job. Lennie sometimes can’t help with the problems he causes, like in chapter 3, Curley picks a fight with Lennie and Lennie feels helpless, George couldn’t help Lennie with this problem because they might have gotten kicked out of the ranch and left without work. So George, he stood back and let it happen. George tries his best. Going into the novel we discover that Lennie has a mental disability that makes him forgetful, George helps Lennie with this and makes Lennie repeat things to remember them. As you can tell, George is really trying his hardest with Lennie, of course he wants a normal life, but he wouldn’t dare leave Lennie alone. Lennie and George have been friends for many years, although the relationship is like father and son, George being the father, they still get along just fine. George is a good friend to Lennie because he always looks out for him and tries to protect him. In many situations, like in their last work place Lennie touched a girl’s dress and was accused of rape, he runs out of town, but George finds him and helps him get away from the townspeople’s accusations. George helps him get a new job. George is always there for Lennie, which is a known
