"Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.", spoke Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lincoln Memorial, August 28, 1963 for the March of Washington. 4 months before this day King was imprisoned for 11 days along with many others for protesting against the inequality and treatment of colored people in Birmingham, Alabama. During the time he was in the Birmingham city jail he was brought a letter from 8 clergymen criticizing what King and other leaders do during protests. He writes back overall stating they have waited long enough for their freedom and they will wait no longer because although they are being pushed down they will not remain on the ground forever. What she saw scared her enough to run away to France. In France she felt no fear, she felt just as another person. In France she did not need to walk another mile to the colored bathroom or drink of the lowered colored fountain because in France there was no segregation. In France she became very successful in her dancing and singing and became highly respected therefore, when she came back to America for a show she was shocked at how she was being treated. Many restaurants did not let her eat, the good hotels would not let her sleep in their beds or get a cup of coffee all because she was colored. This treatment made her furious and thought if they did it to her they must be doing it to every colored person. In her speech for The Washington March told the audience that they need to scream because when they scream loud enough they will be heard, but to the younger audience she said "You must get an education. You must go to school, and you must learn to protect yourself with the pen, and not the gun."(pg102). The future is dependent on the upcoming generations so it is important for those before them to make it easier to get as far and even farther than they did. "I took the rocky path, and I tried to smooth it out a little. I wanted to make it easier for you. I want you to have a chance at what I had.
