The book "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park explores the life of Salva, an 11-year-old boy living in South Sudan, after he is displaced by the Sudanese Civil War. First, in 1985, Salva and his classmates are instructed to run into the bush to escape the gunfire that was heard not far from the school. Then, he joins a group of travelers who are walking away from the war in Sudan, but they abandon him in a barn one evening while he is still asleep. After spending a few days with the barn's owner, Salva is sent away with a different group of travelers, must of whom accept him grudgingly. The group walks for a month toward Ethiopia, and eventually they arrive to the Itang refugee camp in Ethiopia.
Between Remembering and Forgetting The book Strength In What Remains by Tracy Kidder, tells the journey of Deo, from his escape from Hutu-Tutsi genocide in the mid-1990s to the United States and back to Burundi. In his journey, Deo struggle’s against his memories of the genocide, he was faced with two different ways of dealing with his memories, to forget or to remember. In the first half of the book, Deo follows the Burundian concept of forgetting about the past, this is due too the unwillingness of victims to recall and, thereby, relive the violence and pain of their recent history. But as he went through his journey, he realizes that although he wants to forget his past tragedies, he was unable to do so.

Carley, the main character, has a very rough life, and is very tough. After her mother betrays her she gets moved into foster care. She gets put in an amazing foster home, and realizes what it’s like to have a family who cares for her.

In the book “A long walk to water” by: Linda Sue Park, is a book that takes place in Southern Sudan and features all the hardships Salva and Nya had to face while living there such as wild animals, wars, fights through tribes, lack of water and food. Hardships Salva faced in Southern Sudan are lack of water/ food, the wild animals, and the fighting/ war. One of the hardships Salva had to face in Southern Sudan is lack of water and food. In chapters 3-4 Salva had gotten water from a woman older than Salva’s mother that he had met after he was left alone, the woman gave Salva a gourd of water and a bag of raw peanuts.
All But My Life, by Gerda Weissmann Klein, is an absolutely amazing autobiography. Gerda tells about her childhood and how she grows into an adult in many German labor camps. Gerda’s home town has been taken over by the Germans during the holocaust. Her wealthy jewish family is forced to live like slaves until they are separated and moved to different German camps. Gerda tells her story like the reader is there with her.

"Running for His Life" In the story "Running for His Life", Michael Hall explains the genocide Gilbert Tuhabonye experienced when he was in high school in East Africa and how he managed to escape and relive his life in Austin, Texas. Tuhabonye's teachers and the Tutsi teenagers were burned alive and beaten to death by friends of theirs. A couple of students tried eluding, but we're caught and killed by the killers. The building was on fire, burning corpses, and burning to death any students who remained alive.

This a book about a boy called David which is the author who was brutally beaten and starved by his mentally ill, and alcoholic mother. His mother thinks of it as some kind of games – games that almost left him dead. Dave had to learn how to play his mother’s game in order to survive.

When Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with his disease, the world of baseball took a devastating blow. Lou Gehrig had been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, which forced him to retire from baseball. Gehrig addressed his fans on July 4, 1939 to inform them of his situation. Although Gehrig knew that he would eventually face death, he did not convey any fear. Lou Gehrig elaborately appealed to his audience by showing his gratitude for them; meanwhile, expressing the gravity of his disease, however also illuminating the situation by reflecting on the positives, rather than dwelling on the negatives.
This quarter I read This is the Story of you by Beth Kaphart, from beginning to end this book was very interesting and intriguing. I found myself sitting down to read and then not being able to stop. I would definitely recommend this book for any high school student to read. This story is about a little town called Haven.
