Linus Baker Quotes

The novel The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune, was first published in March 2020. This novel is about love, courage, strength, and learning how to love people from all different walks of life. Linus works for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth (DICOMY), and over this novel, Linus learns who he truly is and how he can accept himself.

In the beginning of the novel, Linus is a shy, self-conscious, rule follower who is often being judged and pushed around by his co-workers. Linus Baker is a very lonely man who lives by himself, with his cat “If one were to ask if Linus Baker was lonely… he would still say no, even though he was, and almost desperately” (31). This quote shows how lonely Linus is even though he won’t admit it to himself everyone around him notices. Linus is also a very self-conscious person who often stays late at work just to avoid his co-workers and supervisor, “He couldn’t think of a single thing he’d done out of order” (18). This shows how self-conscious Linus is about his work and how much of a rule follower he is. Because he knows what he is supposed to be doing, and how it should be done, and knows that he has done nothing wrong.

Linus realizes DICOMY is not a good company like he thought. “It should be noted that the files given to me for this assignment are woefully inadequate, leaving out pertinent facts'' (127). This quote shows how Linus is starting to push back at DICOMY and telling them what they should do better. This part of the novel starts taking a turning point, Linus is being more of his authentic self and actually speaking his mind instead of being a blind rule follower.
