Literacy is the capacity to read, write, communicate, and solve problems at levels of expertise essential to function on the job, in the family, and society. It is the key to achievement for employees, parents, and community members. Furthermore, it allows individuals to accomplish their goals and dreams as well as to share their gifts with the world around them. For example, Literacy for Life is located in William and Mary’s School of Education; it is a nonprofit organization that promotes adult literacy in the greater Williamsburg area through free customized instruction for both native-born and non-native born learners. “In the adult basic education program, learners develop their reading, writing and math skills and work towards personal goals in area such as employment, parenting, health, or increased independence” (“Programs” 1).It offers great opportunity for learners who is English as a second language to develop and integrate more fully into America society by improving their English literacy and civics skills. “Foreign-born adults improve their ability to practice in American life by developing their English language skills and their understanding of American life, government, history, and culture” (“Program”1).Moreover, the program provides career development services to adults who .are seeking to gain employment, retain their current employment or advance in their careers. “Literacy for life’s tutors and other volunteers are the heart of our program,” Mary said . “About 300 volunteers help more than 800 learners at literacy for life.” Tutors commence deducting their time to organization as an instructor or teaching a conversation class for English as second Language (ESL) students. “One-on-one and small group instruction in reading, writing, math, and spoken English. Help with special events, assistance with fundraising, and administrative support” (“Tutors”1). “Tutoring is a rewarding and life-enhancing experience. Previous teaching experience is not required, nor is another language.
