Lizzie Borden committed the murders of her father and stepmother in 1892. Lizzie was found not guilty in court, and while the case was never solved, people became suspicious of her involvement after the trial. Bridget Sullivan likely helped Lizzie cover up the murders. Lizzie was known to not have a good relationship with her father, Andrew, stepmother Abby. While Andrew was a successful man who supported the family, Lizzie resented him for sharing his wealth with others, especially her stepmother. All the tension in the house can’t make for an easy job for a housekeeper, so it is safe to say that Bridget was mistreated and fed up with the Bordens. On August 3rd, the day before the murders, Lizzie’s uncle John Morse came to discuss business matters with Andrew. Whatever the matter, it created tension between Lizzie and her family. According to Cheryl Eddy’s article, “With the despised Andrew and Abby out of the way, Lizzie and Emma stood to inherit an estate.” Lizzie had a motive to kill in order to gain her father’s money. In the morning, it seemed as if Lizzie wanted people out of the house. She sent her father out to deliver a letter in the town and asked her maid if she planned to leave the house that day. While Bridget was ok, it explains, “She trudged up the back stairs to her room to lie down. She heard the City Hall bell ring. an hour until noon.” This is what Bridget explains in her statement in court. There is no way of guaranteeing that Bridget is asleep in her room.
