How to free dive, not with oxygen tanks, and not off of a diving board. Free diving is purely breath hold, without oxygen tanks or air pockets. Diving for lobster is very important to me because it is a hobby that I share with my dad and also my uncles. Diving is a hobby that forces many people out of their comfort zone, and puts me back into mine. I love diving because, you are able to think so many things while being completely silent. This past year was my second year diving, and I had been studying how to dive, and how to find spots that gave us the best chance of reaching our fifteen lobster per day limit, and also different techniques, to increase my breath hold time. On the surface of the water, you will begin to hyperventilate or take a lot of small breaths for about thirty seconds in order to get oxygen flowing through your lungs. Then, after doing this, you will want to take about five very deep breaths until you are confident, take that last deep breath and dive. As soon as you duck your head underwater, you must “spit” the snorkel, this is an extremely simple process that includes taking your snorkel out of your mouth. This step is very important while especially spearfishing because it decreases the amount of bubbles, making it more difficult for fish to see you. Another reason for spitting the snorkel goes back to maximizing the amount of air you have before the dive. One of the biggest threats to free divers is shallow water blackout. Shallow water blackout is when a diver is surfacing and becoming closer and closer to the surface, then their body shuts down, you become unconscious. This is also a reason why you should always dive with at least one partner; more is always better because if you do happen to blackout, then there are many people to help you out of the water.
