The population of college students in the town of shillong grows drastically with students coming from all corners of North Eastern States and other states as well. It is presumed that a shift from familiar circumstances to new surroundings will generate some kind of feelings of loneliness on individuals. Concept of loneliness and isolation: Being alone is different from being lonely. Loneliness relates to the inner feeling in the deep recesses of the soul. According to Kaitholil (2010) in Coping with Loneliness Made Easy Loneliness is defined as a feeling of being cut off from human contacts and a longing to be in touch with the other than him/her. It is very close to forlornness, i.e sadness from being forsaken or abandoned. It may also be a mental state, a character trait or a disposition towards being alone. One could have people around him/her throughout the day or even be in a lifelong marriage, and still experience a deep, pervasive loneliness. Unsurprisingly, loneliness and isolation can have a serious detrimental effect on one's mental and physical health. It needs to be emphasized that loneliness is not the same as being alone.
