Of Mice and Men contains many themes like dreams, the corrupting power of women, discrimination, friendship, loneliness and power. However, the themes being discussed are dreams and loneliness; the two themes are - in my opinion - very important to discuss as people don't understand the importance of dreams and how lonely people can get and how it affects their lives. A 'dream' is a cherished aspiration, ambition or ideal. 'Dreams' are significant as they are the starting point of every person's goal in life or a vision of what everybody wants to do/be in the future. According to Sheldon D. The duo's dream(s) were to "own a little patch of land and live on it in freedom" and "tend the soft-haired rabbits", which was also known as the American Dream; where ranch workers dreamed for a better life. Why is it a significant factor of the story? Without their dream(s), there wouldn't have been a purpose for why the story was written as how it was. For example, if it weren't for their dream(s), then they wouldn't need to go work at the ranch and earn money to buy their own land to live in. If it weren't for their dream(s), the friendship between George and Lennie would've sailed away already; if it weren't for their friendship, the dream wouldn't even have seemed possible. Referring to pages 15 & 16, George was re-telling the story of their dream and how they were going to live it to Lennie, who was very ecstatic about it. On page 98, Curley's Wife said, "I never get to talk to nobody. I get awfully lonely." Her quote proves she does get lonely. Referring to ENotes, it states, "Her sexuality isolates her from the other characters. She is bored and lonely, but her attempts to engage the attention of the men on the ranch only serve to push them further away from her." Therefore, her loneliness makes her even more lonely since there are no other women she can make friends with and the men are evading her so it makes it harder for her to befriend
