Jasmine Garcia Todd English, Period 5 28 March 2024 Ralph is the best leader on the island. Hiss hiss hiss as the fire goes rouge around the island. The officer walks up to Ralph, and he takes full responsibility for all the chaos. This is an important quality of leadership. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, a group of boys are stranded on an island and have no way of getting out. Jack, Ralph, Piggy, Simon, Roger, and Samaneric work together to rescue the children. They planned to make a fire as a signal to any boats or planes nearby to let them know that they were on the island. Things get bad; the boys resort to savagery and lose focus on their main goal, getting rescued. When Ralph finds out, he yells, “‘There was a ship. Out there. You said you'd keep the fire going, and you let it out!’” (Golding 70). This indicates that he has no problem with speaking up when things are wrong. Throughout the book, most of the kids don’t really speak out against Jack. Being able to speak up is one of the key characteristics of being a leader. Ralph is specifically communicating with Jack about the fire because it’s important. Showing that he cares about the most important things on the island. In another instance, “‘All day I've been working with Simon. No one else is. They're off bathing, eating, or playing” (Golding 51). He did not have to work with Simon; he could have been playing with the other boys. Yet he stepped up when no one else wanted to. A good leader knows when to get things down, and Ralph is exhibiting this behavior. This shows that he puts his duties before anything else.
