“In a world full of boys, he’s a gentleman”. Taylor Swift’s words describe Simon’s personality clearly, as the group of boys act completely immature, Simon takes responsibility. On the deserted island, the boys have no adults and to them, that means no rules. The boys quickly become evil, especially Jack. They are bloodthirsty, taunt the little ones, and ostracize certain boys. Contrastingly, Simon is sensitive to the other kids' feelings and emotions. In William Golding’s novel Lord of The Flies, Simon displays Christ-like traits that offer hope to the rest of the boys, even though he is killed. Simon was the only boy to help Ralph in making the shelters and he “found [the littles] the fruit they could not reach” (Golding 56). Through his actions, Simon shows genuine concern for the boys’ well-being, regardless of the obstacles they encounter on the island. Simon pays close attention to the littles, who are scared and almost abandoned on the island. Similarly, Simon shows his compassion through the help that he is willing to offer to anyone. When “Jack struck his fist through Piggy’s stomach” (71), Simon “found [Piggy’s glasses] for him”(71). Simon did this without hesitation and was impervious to the laughter and criticism from the rest of the boys. In addition, Simon is completely selfless. Simon saw that Piggy had not received anything to eat, so he “shoved his meat over the rocks to Piggy” (74). Despite his own hunger, Simon prioritizes Piggy’s health over his, and this act of kindness shows his unselfishness.
