Who is the real beast? This is one of the questions that readers ask themselves after finishing Lord of the Flies. It is a question that is open to interpretation, and not one unanimous answer exists for everyone. In my personal opinion, I believe that Simon is the real beast. In this paper, I will explain this theory of Simon being the beast. I hope this paper can give the reader a new perspective on the question, “who is the real beast?” Simon is the purest and most innocent character in the whole book. He is inherently good, with nature and life favoring him. He is a Jesus Character and acts like a prophet numerous times throughout the story. Simon knows the truth about the beast and the island, but he was persecuted before carrying out his message, as the boys saw him as the beast. 143, when the mother pig speaks with Simon, she asks him, “Aren’t you afraid of me?” As we all know that Simon is a Jesus Character, this quote can symbolize Fear of the Lord, one of the gifts of God. Fear of the Lord does not essentially mean being scared of God, but instead the act of revering God in awe. When the Lord of the Flies asks why Simon isn’t afraid of it, it is essentially asking why it is not being worshiped by him. He then shakes his head in response. This symbolizes Simon standing up to the beast, since he knows that the beast is not real. The fourth point is about the line, “I wanted — to go to a place — a place I know… a place in the jungle” (pg. 85). This line occurs when Simon is interrogated at a meeting on why he was out at night. When Simon replies with this quote, the other boys scold him for going out at night, as they assumed that he was the beast. This place in the forest is the same place that the hunters murdered the mother pig. Maybe all these events are connected, and maybe Simon was always meant to be the beast and
