Established in 1869, the department was initially diminutive and responsible for maintaining civil order in a city experiencing rapid growth. Over time, the department expanded both in size and significance, playing a critical role in bolstering the city's structural framework. The LAPD's primary duty was enforcing municipal laws and ensuring the cleanliness of the streets. The department was renowned for its unwavering commitment to upholding the law and exercising force when necessary to protect the community. In the years to come, the LAPD shall endure as a symbol of rigorous law enforcement practices.

Possibly the worst scandal was the Rampart incident in the late 90s, which involved Rampart Division agents accused of wrongdoing such as evidence tampering, framing suspects, and shooting innocent unarmed people. The LAPD's image was severely damaged by this scandal, resulting in several organizational changes. Other significant scandals, like the Rodney King beating in 1991, caused a stir throughout the nation and resulted in numerous reforms within the LAPD, including creating a new department and training programs. Cases of corruption, including extortion and violence, have also arisen over time, necessitating increased scrutiny and responsibility for the LAPD.
