Hi Latasha, I agree with how you described that Stevenson’s work enables him to see both sides. I liked the way you put it, that Stevenson “understands how the system actually works and how it is supposed to work.” I wish that those two concepts would always synonymous, but I know that is not always the case. I also agree that he has more empathy for his clients.

Pavel Acevedo’s Art symbolizes the roots of his culture and his home. People will bring their culture with them to their home to have that satisfaction of never forgetting where you come from or your struggles. Therefore he is not only bringing Oaxaca, Mexico to United states but also wants to represent California as well. When someone intends to display a purpose in their art it is either wanting to persuade or influence.

At this year’s ArtPrize, I saw hundreds of great works of art, but I decided to vote for Emoh by Loren Naji (62624). I chose this sculpture because it is unique and meaningful. His medium was uncommon because no other artist used materials from abandoned houses. The sculpture also appealed to me because of his message of homelessness awareness. It reminded me all day of the severity of homelessness as I walked around Grand Rapids looking at the different works of art, while at the same time people were sitting with nowhere to go in the cold weather.

A controversy over the value of art has recently been sparked by a bill proposed by republican state representative Scott Raecker in Iowa. Representative Raecker has proposed that the University Of Iowa Museum Of Art should sell a certain piece of art in its collection to create money for scholarships and general school funding. While normally this would seem like a sound and straightforward idea, but the piece in question is the prized possession the museum: Mural, a 1943 painting by Jackson Pollock. Because of the significance of the piece this bill has created two drastically opposed sides in regards to the issue. To truly understand the issue, both sides should be examined without bias so that both arguments can be taken into account.
“The pleasure which we derive from the representation of the present is due not only to the beauty with which it can be invested, but also to its essential quality of being present” (Baudelaire 793). Baudelaire’s theory of the flaneur written in The Painter of Modern Life is relevant today, most notably in the works of Edgar Allen Poe’s The Man of the Crowd and Charles Dickens Our Mutual Friend. The reading of the flanerie occurring within these narratives is the representation of urban experiences through the depiction of the landscape of London and an exploration of city street life. Our Mutual Friend captures the panoramic urban city with its people, incidents and the flaneur who observes and records reality objectively. "
Introduction Visual and performing arts tend to act as separate entities within the field of education; considerably isolated from the majority of academia, these sectors are often considered to be secondary or elective options after completing primary education. The arts are an essential part of a well-rounded education, however, when an institute begins a budgeting process, the arts are rarely considered a top priority. For example, during periods of recession many public schools within the United Stated were forced to cut visual, performing and musical arts programs, despite studies that proved the exposure to the arts to be beneficial for students both academically and in extracurricular activities.
