Louis Henry Sullivan was born September 3, 1856 to immigrant parents from Switzerland. Sullivan graduated high school at the age of sixteen before entering the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He spent a year at the institute before taking an Architect job in Philadelphia under the firm Furness and Hewitt. Sullivan moved to Chicago in 1873, working for William Le Baron Jenney before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Returning to the states after a year, Sullivan continued to work for various firms before making partner at architect Dankmar Adler's firm in Chicago. The 19th century boomed with industrial advancements and technologies. With the growth of the middle class and the progressive change of the role of women in society, the need for designers grew as advertisements for products were in high demand. Louis, Missouri and built in 1891 is one of the Sullivan's most prominent skyscrapers. The purpose of this monumental skyscraper was to be an office building for St. Louis Brewers Association, managed by Ellis Wainwright. Sullivan’s, desired to put great emphasis on the height of his skyscrapers. Tripartite composition, and the tall rectangular shape of the building helped him achieve his grandiose high structure. Other than having slight neo-classical leanings with classical pillars, Sullivan’s primary concern was to create a new and modern approach to the skyscraper.
