Luke 16:1-13
The book of Luke comforts the reader as its written “For Luke Christianity had universal significance. He clearly shared the viewpoint of Paul, his friend and companion, as evidenced in his broad out look on the world and understanding of the gospel as relevant for all”(Hiebert)
From the beginning of chapter 16,The word “μαθητάς” emphasized, which has a definition of people of learning. New testament do not give emphasis point to the decision but it prefer as becoming the disciple. “some translations soften the picture by rendering the word as “servant” rather than slave.”(Boring)From the book of Luke, when Luke uses figure of speech, he used ” τις” . This verse shows keen insight, after he was fired , he realize “in order to make new friends who might later hire him” (Walvrood) He sets up ultimate goal. “the ex manager charged the rich man’s two debtors less than what they actually owed”(Walvrood) the idea of steward was to call each people to be deducted of what they owe. The managers thinking was , people wil welcome him into their homes. This was adding up toward his dishonesty and damaging the richman’s wealth at the same time. When rich man heard about what he was doing, he commended. “The dishonest manager had not done a good thing. But he was smart to plan things ahead for the future to be secure. This was the plan for the secure future. “for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light” is Hebrew idiom, since Hebrew doesn’t have adjective, “children of this age” used as adjective. This is telling the Israelites to plan early for the future. Jesus wants His follower to live with
