What is a Christian? If you ask the average American who professes Christianity, you will get a variety of responses. For some it may a person who goes to church. For others, it may be a somebody who prayed a prayer on the last night of a youth camp. Maybe even someone who is a good person. However, what if there’s a question that may illicit a different response, most likely confusion. What is a disciple? Now that will begin to have brains churning when you ask that question. The Complete Book of Discipleship by Bill Hull begins to identify what a disciple is and much more. What is a Disciple? Answering this question in our Western culture is not comfortable in many churches. A disciple was one of the twelve people that walked alongside Jesus in the Gospels and it stops there. Many people want to be Christians without having to carry the tag disciple alongside them. However, this cannot be the case. Hull says, “I must be blunt: I find no biblical evidence for a separation of Christian from disciple.” As the church, we have to move away by letting our attendees believe that there are levels or tiers that they can subscribe to or unsubscribe from. A lot can be learned by slowing down and seeing some of the steps that Jesus takes throughout the discipleship process. Hull clearly shows and scripturally backs up things we can model with how Jesus did discipleship. One of them is that Jesus chose a specific type of person. There were many of the religious elite who Jesus could have chosen but he looked past them. There were plenty of Gentiles he could’ve chosen, but he didn’t. he chose the observant Jew who came worked in the trades. In essence, Jesus chose the Jews who knew the law and were teachable enough to follow
