Lupus Erythematous Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE) is a chronicautoimmune disease occurring in the muscle and skeletal systems. If a person were to have Lupus Erythematous, his/her immune sys-tem would begin to attack itself, rather than outside invaders. As a result, tissues, organs, and nerves are harshly affected. According to the Lupus Foundation of America (2017), SLE affects more than 1.5 million Americans, mainly ranging from ages 15-44, but most commonly in young African-American women. Cause The cause of Systemic Lupus Erythematous is unknown, however there are several fac-tors that may have an effect on the symptoms and disease. Inheritance of genes that were also autoimmune is believed to be a reason of SLE. Viruses and certain …show more content…
Also, reactions like photosensitivity, loss of appetite, ulcers, and hair loss may occur (Shiel, et al., 1996.) Treatment Since the cause of SLE is unknown, Systemic Lupus Erythematous does not have a defi-nite cure (Shiel, et al., 1996.) All further treatment mechanisms only alleviate symptoms and lessen inflammation of organs, but do not eliminate them. Another factor to consider when going about treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematous is the severity of the disease. For example, one with SLE that has few symptoms may need little or no treatment. Many people with Sys-temic Lupus Erythematous need rest as a part of their treatment, especially if they are engaging in exercise (Herndon, J. , 2005.) Medications are one of the most popular approaches, such as high doses of corticosteroids that suppress immunity. Also, sun protection is recommended to patients of Systemic Lupus Erythematous, such as wearing sunscreen, avoiding sunlight, or wearing protective clothing. Prognosis Systemic Lupus Erythematous is a chronic disease. Further research is being conducted in hopes of finding better treatment and the causes and cures for SLE, such as the idea of com-pletely wiping out and redesigning one’s immune system. According to Herndon, J. , 2005, peo-ple with SLE are at a higher risk of getting cancer, specifically blood cancer. For women, breast cancer and heart disease are also a potential. People with Systemic Lupus Erythematous can improve their symptoms and prognosis by better educating themselves and monitoring their
